Sound Paintings with Knowa Knowone
Available Now at Addictech.com
Muti’s latest features some sly beats from Knowa Knowone, and it definitely ranks up there as one of my favorite releases for 2011.
Knowa Knowone demonstrates his keen ability to layer subtle compositions over tightly produced beats that leave a welcome space in the mixes. My favorite tune on the release is that aptly named, “Let Me Tell You A Story”. A wonderfully funky drum rhythm surges behind a crisp piano groove and a crunchy, pulsing, bassline. An additional stand out for me is the track, “Ra”, a highly addictive hip-hop tune that is full of energy and beautiful melodies as violins ride through the music with rolling drums and superb vocals.
Here is more on the release from the Muti camp:
On Sound Paintings Middle Eastern vibes, Hip Hop and Gypsy Folk music all become a unique mix of hoppy, earthy beats with glitch and bass thrown on them for good measure, taking a listener to some very friendly places.
Knowa Knowone has been pushing crunky midtempo breaks of all sorts for quite some time, featuring edgy bass driven beats, complex drum programming, strong melodies and vocal performances from some of the most secret lyricist weapons out of Oakland and strongly inspired by classic Underground and Hyphy Hip Hop.
He takes deep strides into this bold new territory with a visionary fusion of the whompy, bass driven sound that is fueling bass culture and tight Hip Hop and Reggae flavors.
With releases on Street Ritual Recordings and Muti Music and previous collaborations with ill.Gates, Mimosa and Sleepyhead, Knowa is no stranger to producing cutting edge beats.
And while you are here, download the free track from Knowa Knowone below, courtesy of Muti Music.

P.H. Fat – Dinosaur Blood! (Muti Music)

Available now at Addictech.com – http://www.addictech.com/p/74183
“P.H.Fat’s debut album “Dinosaur Blood” is swampy mix of gut-stirring bass and sticky psycho-delic dubby beats overlaid with luscious lyrics, which, when experienced, feels like the musical equivalent of a sweaty bone-crushing hug from a sexy alien from outer space. “Dinosaur Blood” is an aural mind f**k for sure. – http://www.bizcommunity.com
P.H. Fat performed at the Public Enemy show at The Assembly in Cape Town in December 2010 and it marked another big stepping stone for South African rap and perhaps countries like South Africa are providing more space or more of an open ear for Rap & Electronica fusion bands to make their mark. Based on the strength of their dynamic performances while touring, P.H.Fat – “The Big Five ft Fuzzy Slippers” reached top chart positions on South African airways including the no 1 position on MFM`s SA Top 10, as well as play listing on the Tuks Fm. The Video of “The Big Five ft Fuzzy Slippers” has also reached no 2 on MK`s Top 10 Chart. P.H. Fat gives us a taste of attitudes and electronic music fusions that are fueling South African bass culture right now. The music is straight up attitude with big drops and lots of bounce, so get ready for your taste of Dinosaur Blood!
P.H.Fat band info:
P.H.Fat are three maniacs from Cape Town who make Psychedelic-Bass-Rap that smacks hard enough to make you sweat mayonnaise. Their favorite color is green and they sometimes play golf together.
Narch is the fusion between Hip-Hop and Electronic music. With his distinct sound and cemented style, he has released on Muti Music before and has produced 2 of the tracks for Afrikaans rap sensation “Jack Parow”s, début album. Mike is a downhill skate champ, studying English and Psychology and giving us insight into his mind with his unique deliveries as lyricist.
Disco Izrael was born in the future but travelled to Cape Town 3 years ago in search of futuristic opportunities in music and art. His inspirations are fantasy, rap and hot beats.

Vermin Street presents Manni Dee

I’ve been diggin’ the sounds coming from the Vermin Street camp these days, and this new one from Brighton, UK’s, Manni Dee, is no exception. Both tunes provide a unique mix of low slung beats, organic sounds, trudging basslines and fits of electronic enticement. The remixes from Pixelord, Halp and Alby D are superb and do a great job of giving the listeners a new twist on some already unique tunes.
This release goes live on May 17th at Addictech, Beatport, Juno, iTunes, etc.

Thriftworks – ZenZero LP [Street Ritual]

Hitting the airwaves on March 28th comes Thriftworks new LP, ZenZero, brought to you by the crew over at Street Ritual. This releases features an assortment of future flavored hip-hop grooves wrapped up with glitchy edits and 8bit swirls.
In the words of Street Ritual themselves:
“If you enjoy artists such as Freddy Todd, Slugabed, Shigeto, Dabrye, Hudson Mohawke, edIT, Mono/Poly… you might be interested in a brand new artist by the name of Thriftworks. Hailing from the Bay Area by way of Pennsylvania, his sound is a refreshing breath of air in a smoggy and overpolluted bass music landscape. Blending hints of jazz and soul with innovative sampling and resynthesis, Thriftworks walks the line between slap-happy loose and ultra-tight, crisply snapping and deeply grinding. With an undercurrent of that “Bay Area sound”, the tides of Thriftworks’ sounds still rise to the challenge of creating a coherent yet perfectly scattered landscape. Symphonic with a grimy edge, the ZenZero LP is a 20-track journey into an exciting new producer’s dream world.
Thriftworks aka J. Atlas has been a musician for most of his life, playing piano and guitar since his childhood and dabbling with production first in high school. Inspired by psychedelic hip hop and the LA beat scene, he arrived in California in 2008 to study audio engineering.”

1990 – Mixtape Edit Vol. 1
Self proclaimed instrumentalist beatmaker, Moses Abrego, known to most as 1990, recently released his latest EP, Mixtape Edit Vol. 1. This San Jose, California producer just moved out to the deserts of Arizona and hit me up with an email regarding the new release. Downtempo style beats with scattered bits of 8bit sounds all molded together in a lovely hip-hop flavor round out this eight track EP. After a good listen, I must say this comes in just in time for the wonderful month of love and sappiness we know as February.
Did I mention this release is free? We all know how much people love free music, and if you’re in need of a good soundtrack to cuddle up to with that lady or man in your life, this will fit the mood perfectly. Head over to 1990′s bandcamp page and grab the free download. While you’re at it, send him a message and let him know how much you dig the music. I’m looking forward to hearing more from our new friend in Arizona.

Glitch.FM – Annual Show Seek

Glitch.fm is doing it’s annual hunt for new shows to put on the station. Below is the press release with all relevant information. If your a DJ, and you’ve got the skills and want to have your own show, check all the details below and get busy!
——————————————————————————–
We’re ramping up on our annual call for shows for the ever-growing and beautifully-expanding Glitch.FM (http://glitch.fm).
Our core mission: To promote and grow media (which is mainly, but not limited to, music) that exploits technology for artistic gain.
Here’s what we’re looking for/the requirements:
* Shows must be live-broadcast (We can help you get set up for this)
* Shows do not have to be all dj/live-set/mixed. You can pitch to do a talk-show, chart-countdowns, multi-format, etc
* We strongly prefer live 2-hour weeklies (bit of a commitment, we know, but it’s best for developing a dedicated listener-base an momentum!)
* You can otherwise do a 2-hour bi-monthly
AND NOW (here’s the kicker)
*You can apply to be granted access to just hijack free/unused air-time (IE: you cannot infringe on scheduled shows). We are opening the floor to this in hopes you’ll find yourself playing more often than you think, in which case you might as well just apply for a scheduled show
.
If you’re interested, pop on over to Our Contact Form (http://glitch.fm/contact) to apply! Please read the directions (IE: Supply a demo mix!)
Why you should consider applying!
- It’s a great and supportive community (not to mention you’ll probably see some familiar faces from GHF)
- It can be an excellent platform for marketing yourself as a DJ and/or artist.
- It’s an awesome networking experience. Through Glitch.FM, DJs have gotten bookings, met collaborators, have obtained press access at festivals, etc.
- It can be YOUR platform: Glitch.FM is a registered not-for-profit with pending 501(c)3 paper-work, and is meant to be a community station, first and foremost. We do not exist to make money, but rather we exist for the pure fun of watching things grow: and that includes you and how you play a role at the station. You can simply utilize air-time, but we are also typically supportive if you want to approach us about using the brand itself in other ways: be it throwing glitch.fm events, taking part in station development, playing around with guerilla marketing techniques, etc
